2019 NATIVE AMERICAN TV WRITERS LAB – RECAP

June 2, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

NATIVE AMERICAN TV WRITERS LAB CONCLUDES 4TH YEAR!

The LA Skins Fest wrapped the 4th Annual Native American TV Writers Lab. The five week program hosted seven Native American writers. Each participant developed and wrote their own original television pilot. In addition, the lab fellows met with creative executives from TBS, NBC, HBO, Bad Robot, Nickelodeon and Kung Fu Monkey Productions. They also met with literary managers from Echolake Entertainment.

The 4th Annual Native American TV Lab is supported by Comcast NBCUniversal, The Walt Disney Company, HBO, WarnerMedia and Kung Fu Monkey Productions.

The 7 participants:

Cara Jade Myers (Kiowa/Wichita)

John Timothy (Muscogee Creek)

Shelley Dennis (Choctaw)

William Paul Smith (Eastern Shoshone)

Micah Wright (Muscogee Creek)

Carolina Hoyos (Quechua Inka)

Robert Vestal (Cherokee)

The five week total immersion lab was mentored and guided by Bryan Davidson (Creative Executive/Skydance Media).

The NATIVE AMERICAN TV WRITERS LAB was created to expand the amount of Native Americans working behind the camera, as a way to increase fair and accurate portrayals of Native Americans on television. During the 2013-14 television season, Native Americans composed only 0.1% of writers staffed on TV shows, according to the 2015 Writers Guild of America-West TV Staffing Brief.
