The federal government created boarding schools throughout the nation to assimilate
Native American children. This film is about the Rapid City Indian Boarding School
(1898-1933). Today, many of Rapid City Native American community are descendants
of the children who survived the Rapid City Indian Boarding School. Mortality rates were
very high, and the government did not keep records of the deaths or where the children
were buried. 50 children have been identified so far at the Rapid City Boarding School.
This short emphasizes the history of the Rapid City Boarding School and the
Remember the Children community’s efforts to find and protect the children's graves.
This short film is intended to help create a full-length documentary that will include
memorial development, legal land issues and current issues associated with what was
the Rapid City Boarding School. This film is in honor of those that perished at U.S.
Indian Boarding Schools.
