On August 9, 2016, 22-year-old Colten Boushie from Red Pheasant First Nation was shot and killed after he and his friends, driving a car with a flat tire, stopped in an occupied farm-yard. Two days later, farmer Gerald Stanley was charged with second-degree murder.
