DESCRIPTION:Politician Man\, the debut single from Adrian Sutherland\, is a protest song for Canada. The seeds were planted in July 2019 when his Cree community of Attawapiskat declared a state of emergency over contaminated water. At the same moment\, insensitive comments from a politician in Ottawa sparked massive public outcry\, a spontaneous response from Sutherland himself\, and national media coverage. \nJump ahead to August\, when co-writing sessions with musical brothers sparked a song that was important\, timely\, and totally kickass. One day in September\, that song came to life in a recording studio. By the first week of October\, a filmmaker was adding his keen artistic eye to the message behind the music. \nPolitician Man was released October 17\, 2019\, with accompanying video by Justin Stephenson (director of animation and editor\, The Secret Path). It speaks to Canada’s troubled relationship with First Nations. Growing up in an isolated place like Attawapiskat has given Sutherland a unique perspective\, while his growing profile as an artist is now giving him a voice. This is his way of taking action\, doing something\, about the ongoing struggle that Indigenous people face in Canada\, while the country takes growing steps toward reconciliation. \n“Sometimes reconciliation sounds like an empty word\, and it’s frustrating. You keep trying to get ahead\, but there are ongoing challenges\, one obstacle after another. I have to wonder what I’m doing still living in Attawapiskat\, and if anything is ever going to make a difference\,” says Sutherland.

DESCRIPTION:Somewhere in the city\, Mason lures his boyfriend Kelly off his seat to dance\, leading them to create a happy memory. Jump forward to present day\, Kelly is attending a late AA meeting while Mason is drinking at a party\, elsewhere in the city. Mason receives a phone call with some distressing news. Back at the AA meeting\, Kelly listens to Mason’s voicemail\, in which he claims to have been drugged and needs help. Kelly leaves the AA meeting to go find Mason despite it being late in the evening. \nYet\, when Kelly locates Mason at the party\, he finds him in an upstairs bedroom with another man\, looking far from needing help. Kelly storms out of the party and onto the streets of the city\, with Mason chasing after him. They argue yet Mason does appear to be a little out of it. Out of concern\, Kelly takes Mason to a late night coffee shop\, in attempts to sober him up. The pair stroll down memory lane over coffee. A little less angry though still concerned\, Kelly decides Mason still cannot make it home on his own. \nKelly walks Mason back to his place\, where they used to live together\, to find an eviction notice posted on the door. Once inside\, Kelly tries to provide comfort but Mason makes a horrific confession that not only is he HIV+ but he knew for a while back when they were together. The pair eventually fall asleep from mental exhaustion. The next morning\, Mason finds an empty bed with Kelly nowhere to be found. After a brief search\, Mason finds Kelly sitting in the backyard intoxicated. Emotional chaos ensues as Kelly blames Mason for everything. All Mason can do is wrap his arms around Kelly\, who has reached his lowest point.

DESCRIPTION:“Stand Up!” – El Plan de Nuestro “Mural de la Raza” \nIn 1985\, Juanita Meza Velasquez organized to paint a 16’ x 82’ Chicano mural on the wall of Payless ShoeSource at 2048 Story Rd\, San José\, CA 95122 near King and Story Roads. Juanita organized what muralist\, José Meza Velasquez would later title “Mural de La Raza” as a tool to end barrio warfare\, empower grafitti artists and barrio youth. \nThe “Mural de La Raza” depicted the history and culture of precolumbian lore\, the Mexican Revolution\, the Chicano Movement\, local figures\, as well as the very youth who assisted in painting the mural. \nAfter more than three decades of “Mural de La Raza” being a central fabric of San José’s Eastside\, the mural was unlawfyully removed without notice to the artist or members of the public who took interest in its preservation prior to the removal. Not only was nuestro Mural de La Raza removed\, but so was our history and culture\, and one of the only means of public access to Chicano Studies. During the past 15 years in particular we have witnessed a pattern of Chicano murals being removed largley due to gentrification.
