SUMMARY:Youth Media and Tech Workshop Overview
DESCRIPTION: \n     Since 2009\, the Native American Youth Media and Tech Workshop has travelled to reservations and urban centers across the world to provide an expansive and comprehensive program that provides new access for our community. Every year\, we expand the workshop to include new curriculum\, new technology and new equipment. \nOur multimedia curriculum includes short film production that reflect the community and current issues effecting the youth participants. This entails the development and creation of documentaries\, scripted narratives and PSA’s produced entirely by the young filmmakers. Curriculum includes learning proper camera operation\, on-set sound recording\, directing actors\, lighting scenes\, editing and music composition. The youth present their final pieces to their community at the conclusion of the workshop. \n\n    In 2019\, we launched the Native Youth Animation Workshop. This program offers hands on instruction in 3-D animation software\, 2-D animation drawn by hand and stop-motion animation. The workshop also provides tours of animation and visual effects studios. This initiative is meant to provide Native youth with the inspiration to explore animation as a viable opportunity and career path. This program has partnered with numerous studios and networks to offer genuine access. \n\nIn 2021\, we created the Native Youth Virtual Reality Workshop. This program introduces cutting edge virtual reality applications and video production to Native youth. The workshop teaches new technology to Native youth so they can have every opportunity available in new technology. This program provides an in-depth look into the possibilities virtual reality provides our community. Our organization has partnered with the most high profile tech companies to provide this program. Check out some stills and vids here! \n\nThe entire program culminates with the Native Youth Multimedia Weekend in November. This has youth from all of our programs attend our annual film festival at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood. This initiative has youth participants from several reservations and communities attend studio tours\, production workshops\, film screenings and attendance to the Native American Media Awards. \nCheck Out Our Past and Current Workshops! \n2023\n2022\n2021\n2020\n2019\n2018\n2017\n2016\n2015\n2014\n2013\n2012\n2011\n2010\n2009 \n  \nSponsors: \n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n Meta\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n National Endowment for the Arts\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n Los Angeles County Arts & Culture\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n San Manuel Band of Mission Indians\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n United Talent Agency\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n Comcast NBCUniversal\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n Sony Pictures Entertainment\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n Sony Electronics\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n Verizon\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n California Humanities\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n Union Bank\n \n \n	\n\n\n

SUMMARY:2009 Native Youth Media and Tech Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Since 2009\, we have taught film workshops to youth at reservations and Native American urban centers throughout the United States and Canada. The participating youth learn about writing\, directing\, shooting and editing their own movies.  Equally important\, the youth present these films to their tribal communities and speak before an audience. Check out images from our first Native youth cohort: \n \nIn 2009\, we collaborated with Central High\, a federally funded Native American High School located in downtown Los Angeles.  We worked with over a dozen Native American youth who reside in Los Angeles.  For the entire eight-day workshop\, we brought the participating youth to the University of Southern California’s George Lucas School of Cinematic Arts. This was one of our sponsoring organizations that provided classrooms\, computer labs\, and production equipment.  The youth produced  narrative films and presented them at the Pechanga Indian Reservation in Riverside\, California. Check out one of the films they produced during the week:

SUMMARY:2nd Annual Native American Showrunner Program - Fellows Selected
DESCRIPTION:The Native American Media Alliance announced its selections for the 2nd Annual Native American Showrunner Program\, sponsored by WarnerMedia\, Bad Robot\, Comcast NBCUniversal and the Cherokee Nation Film Office\, in partnership with Kung Fu Monkey Productions. \n“We are so proud to be supporting the Native American Media Alliance with this incredible program\,” said Karen Horne\, Senior Vice President\, Equity and Inclusion\, WarnerMedia. “Amplifying underrepresented voices is a major priority for our company\, and the implementation of the Native American Showrunner Program is a key effort toward achieving that goal.” \n     The Native American Showrunner Program is a nine-month intensive that offers mentorship from television showrunners and series creators to experienced Native American writers. Program fellows take part in meetings with assigned showrunners who will offer guidance on furthering the fellows’ writing careers and to provide creative feedback on current projects. The program consists of one-on-one mentoring to develop the writers’ abilities\, offer advice as it pertains to producing for television and overall insight into running a television series. \n     The Native American Showrunner Program is a unique initiative designed to propel experienced Native American writers to higher levels of television. This initiative continues the Native American MedIa Alliance’s drive for inclusion and focuses on new points of access for the Native American community. The fellowship is a direct extension of the Native American TV Writers Lab as it equips the next generation of Native American writers with the skills and professional network to break into the television producing positions. \nThe 2021 Native American Showrunner Program fellows: \nDoane Tulugaq Avery \nJason Marcus \nCarlee Malemute \n     The Native American Showrunner Program was created to expand the number of Native Americans working behind the camera to increase fair and accurate portrayals of Native Americans on television. Native Americans continue to maintain the lowest representation of writers on current television series. \n     In addition\, participants will author a new pilot and series bible with the artistic support of their respective mentors. Participants will also have group meetings with their fellows participants and showrunners from other television series. These components offer additional creative and business oriented opportunities. Participants will also receive a small stipend\, writing software and additional resources to help bolster their career. \nSponsored by \n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n WarnerMedia\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n Comcast NBCUniversal\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n Bad Robot\n \n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n \n \n \n View Image\n \n	\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Adrian Sutherland - Politician Man
DESCRIPTION:Politician Man\, the debut single from Adrian Sutherland\, is a protest song for Canada. The seeds were planted in July 2019 when his Cree community of Attawapiskat declared a state of emergency over contaminated water. At the same moment\, insensitive comments from a politician in Ottawa sparked massive public outcry\, a spontaneous response from Sutherland himself\, and national media coverage. \nJump ahead to August\, when co-writing sessions with musical brothers sparked a song that was important\, timely\, and totally kickass. One day in September\, that song came to life in a recording studio. By the first week of October\, a filmmaker was adding his keen artistic eye to the message behind the music. \nPolitician Man was released October 17\, 2019\, with accompanying video by Justin Stephenson (director of animation and editor\, The Secret Path). It speaks to Canada’s troubled relationship with First Nations. Growing up in an isolated place like Attawapiskat has given Sutherland a unique perspective\, while his growing profile as an artist is now giving him a voice. This is his way of taking action\, doing something\, about the ongoing struggle that Indigenous people face in Canada\, while the country takes growing steps toward reconciliation. \n“Sometimes reconciliation sounds like an empty word\, and it’s frustrating. You keep trying to get ahead\, but there are ongoing challenges\, one obstacle after another. I have to wonder what I’m doing still living in Attawapiskat\, and if anything is ever going to make a difference\,” says Sutherland.

SUMMARY:Together
DESCRIPTION:Somewhere in the city\, Mason lures his boyfriend Kelly off his seat to dance\, leading them to create a happy memory. Jump forward to present day\, Kelly is attending a late AA meeting while Mason is drinking at a party\, elsewhere in the city. Mason receives a phone call with some distressing news. Back at the AA meeting\, Kelly listens to Mason’s voicemail\, in which he claims to have been drugged and needs help. Kelly leaves the AA meeting to go find Mason despite it being late in the evening. \nYet\, when Kelly locates Mason at the party\, he finds him in an upstairs bedroom with another man\, looking far from needing help. Kelly storms out of the party and onto the streets of the city\, with Mason chasing after him. They argue yet Mason does appear to be a little out of it. Out of concern\, Kelly takes Mason to a late night coffee shop\, in attempts to sober him up. The pair stroll down memory lane over coffee. A little less angry though still concerned\, Kelly decides Mason still cannot make it home on his own. \nKelly walks Mason back to his place\, where they used to live together\, to find an eviction notice posted on the door. Once inside\, Kelly tries to provide comfort but Mason makes a horrific confession that not only is he HIV+ but he knew for a while back when they were together. The pair eventually fall asleep from mental exhaustion. The next morning\, Mason finds an empty bed with Kelly nowhere to be found. After a brief search\, Mason finds Kelly sitting in the backyard intoxicated. Emotional chaos ensues as Kelly blames Mason for everything. All Mason can do is wrap his arms around Kelly\, who has reached his lowest point.

SUMMARY:Stand Up!
DESCRIPTION:“Stand Up!” – El Plan de Nuestro “Mural de la Raza” \nIn 1985\, Juanita Meza Velasquez organized to paint a 16’ x 82’ Chicano mural on the wall of Payless ShoeSource at 2048 Story Rd\, San José\, CA 95122 near King and Story Roads. Juanita organized what muralist\, José Meza Velasquez would later title “Mural de La Raza” as a tool to end barrio warfare\, empower grafitti artists and barrio youth. \nThe “Mural de La Raza” depicted the history and culture of precolumbian lore\, the Mexican Revolution\, the Chicano Movement\, local figures\, as well as the very youth who assisted in painting the mural. \nAfter more than three decades of “Mural de La Raza” being a central fabric of San José’s Eastside\, the mural was unlawfyully removed without notice to the artist or members of the public who took interest in its preservation prior to the removal. Not only was nuestro Mural de La Raza removed\, but so was our history and culture\, and one of the only means of public access to Chicano Studies. During the past 15 years in particular we have witnessed a pattern of Chicano murals being removed largley due to gentrification.

SUMMARY:Monologue Harmonic
DESCRIPTION:Monologue Harmonics is a seemingly paradoxical visual and sonic offering speaking in part from legend\, despotic visions\, collective cultural analysis and individual repeal. Featuring two distinct and intrinsically connected worlds we witness a spiritual journey so thinly tethered to life familiar\, being lured by dark matters towards total disconnect. This journey mirrors a reality not unlike Indigenous current experience with respect to constant colonial resistance; where coming to terms with lost cultural distinction is fast becoming the new culture\, of today/tomorrow.

SUMMARY:808
DESCRIPTION:“808” is an emotional rollercoaster of a film which has won the “Best Thriller Short” award in the Marina Del Rey film Festival and Semi-Finalist in both the Burbank International Film Festival and the Colorado Activist Film Festival. \nThe Hawaiian culture\, land\, and its exploitation resonate throughout the story as Kai\, a lonely Hawaiian woman\, returns home in hopes of reconnecting with friends and family. We meet a colorful cast of characters as she resolutely seeks answers to murder and corruption\, while somehow hoping for redemption. \n808 is an extremely diverse project with a variety of Minority actors cast across the board and nearly every age group represented. \nThe film also seeks to raise environmental awareness with its themes of connection with nature and the people involved in destroying it.
