SUMMARY:Youth Media and Tech Workshop Overview
DESCRIPTION: \n     Since 2009\, the Native American Youth Media and Tech Workshop has travelled to reservations and urban centers across the world to provide an expansive and comprehensive program that provides new access for our community. Every year\, we expand the workshop to include new curriculum\, new technology and new equipment. \nOur multimedia curriculum includes short film production that reflect the community and current issues effecting the youth participants. This entails the development and creation of documentaries\, scripted narratives and PSA’s produced entirely by the young filmmakers. Curriculum includes learning proper camera operation\, on-set sound recording\, directing actors\, lighting scenes\, editing and music composition. The youth present their final pieces to their community at the conclusion of the workshop. \n\n    In 2019\, we launched the Native Youth Animation Workshop. This program offers hands on instruction in 3-D animation software\, 2-D animation drawn by hand and stop-motion animation. The workshop also provides tours of animation and visual effects studios. This initiative is meant to provide Native youth with the inspiration to explore animation as a viable opportunity and career path. This program has partnered with numerous studios and networks to offer genuine access. \n\nIn 2021\, we created the Native Youth Virtual Reality Workshop. This program introduces cutting edge virtual reality applications and video production to Native youth. The workshop teaches new technology to Native youth so they can have every opportunity available in new technology. This program provides an in-depth look into the possibilities virtual reality provides our community. Our organization has partnered with the most high profile tech companies to provide this program. Check out some stills and vids here! \n\nThe entire program culminates with the Native Youth Multimedia Weekend in November. This has youth from all of our programs attend our annual film festival at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood. SUMMARY:2009 Native Youth Media and Tech Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Since 2009\, we have taught film workshops to youth at reservations and Native American urban centers throughout the United States and Canada. The participating youth learn about writing\, directing\, shooting and editing their own movies.  Equally important\, the youth present these films to their tribal communities and speak before an audience. Check out images from our first Native youth cohort: \n \nIn 2009\, we collaborated with Central High\, a federally funded Native American High School located in downtown Los Angeles.  We worked with over a dozen Native American youth who reside in Los Angeles.  For the entire eight-day workshop\, we brought the participating youth to the University of Southern California’s George Lucas School of Cinematic Arts. This was one of our sponsoring organizations that provided classrooms\, computer labs\, and production equipment.  The youth produced  narrative films and presented them at the Pechanga Indian Reservation in Riverside\, California. DESCRIPTION:The 3rd Annual NATIVE AMERICAN TV WRITERS LAB call for submissions is now closed. The lab is sponsored by NBCUniversal\, Netflix\, CBS Entertainment Diversity\, Turner\, and HBO. \n“Between the table reads\, the writers labs\, and the pitch workshops\, the LA SKINS FEST has helped me grow and learn substantially\, not just as a Native and a creative\, but  as a woman in the industry.”  \nKelly Lynne De’Angelo (Tuscarora); Freelance Writer on Netflix Series and Native American TV Writers Lab Fellow \nThe TV Writers lab takes place mid-May through late – June of 2018 and offers 7 Native American writers an opportunity to participate. Each participant will complete an original pilot during the 5 week program and receive feedback from peers and an experienced writing instructor. Past participants include William Gerroutte (Cherokee) who was recently inducted into the NBC’s Writers On The Verge program and signed with Kaplan Stahler Agency\, Kelly Lynne D’Angelo (Tuscarora) is currently a freelance writer on an original Netflix series\, Tom Hanada (Cherokee) is adapting a Stephen King novel and Carlee Malemute (Athabaskan) sold two projects to Lifetime. \nParticipants also meet with our industry sponsors and partners. Past fellows met with executives from NBC\, CBS\, FOX and Lionsgate. Scripts from the lab were also read by Amazon Studios\, Echolake Entertainment and several of our industry supporters. \n\nThe Native American TV lab culminates in a pitch workshop during the 12th Annual LA SKINS FEST that will have each Native writer pitch their scripts to creatives executives from Bad Robot\, ABC\, NBC\, CBS\, FOX\, Lionsgate and several other creative executives and literary managers. \nThe Native American TV Writers Lab is an intensive scriptwriters workshop that prepares Native Americans for writing careers at major television networks. This lab is designed to address the lack of Native American writers in primetime network TV. \nApplication is now closed. \nProgram Dates: Mid-May through Late-June\, 2018 \n___________________________________________________________________________ \nAbout the Program\nThe NATIVE AMERICAN TV WRITERS LAB was created in accordance with the LA Skins Fest’s mission to improve media portrayals of Native Americans and to increase the number of Native Americans employed in all facets of the media industry. \nThe NATIVE AMERICAN TV WRITERS LAB is designed to familiarize participants with the format\, characters and storyline structure of television. The five week\, total immersion workshop will be mentored and guided by an experienced writer with industry credits. The lab will be conducted in Los Angeles\, CA with a maximum of 7 writers accepted. \nThe five-week lab will consist of group discussions\, one on one meetings and workshops. One of the main components to be introduced is the writers room. This is an opportunity to have each participant’s script offered up in a professional capacity as a new television script. All of the writers will participate in offering ideas\, suggestions\, and thoughts on making each script a strong piece.
