SUMMARY:Native Americans in Animation Panel
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday November 19th 5p PT\,  Native American writers\, artists and actors join a panel discussion to share their experience in television animation. Panelists will discuss their backgrounds\, their work experience and their creative path to working on current animated series. This event is sponsored by ASIFA-Hollwyood and is free to attend. \nRegistration now for this panel here \nThe recent explosion of Native American animation from numerous studios and networks has lead to an increased interest in indigenous communities and the portrayal of our people in media. This panel will explore the many opportunities now available to our community and provides insight into the animation industry. \n  \nSpeakers include: \nSherry DeLorme (Northern Arapaho) is a character designer for Disney TV Animation.  She’s also an illustrator\, toy designer and fine artist\, has had work showcased in various galleries across the US and Internationally.  She’s participated in events such as Comic-Con and WonderCon for several years.  She has also served as a Mentor for Women in Animation. \n  \n.. \n\, \n\nJason Marcus (Iroquois) is a writer and comedian from Boston. His writing blends realistic characters with absurdist premises by exploring uniquely human experiences in ways that are universally relatable. Most recently\, he wrote for an upcoming series on Netflix. Among his accolades\, Jason is a Native American TV Writers Lab fellow and an NBC Late Night Writers Workshop alum. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife\, their twin toddlers\, and a pug named Macho Man.\n\n  \n. \n. \n. \n  \nKarissa Valencia (Chumash) – Growing up\, Karissa always dreamed of a career in animation. The Chumash Tribe supported her Hollywood dreams and generously provided full-ride scholarships to the schools of her choosing. Since she couldn’t draw (she tried!)\, she studied English and Creative Writing at the University of San Diego and then pursued a graduate degree in television and film at Syracuse University. Karissa’s animation career began at Nickelodeon with an internship in Talent Development. After her time as a “nicktern\,” she worked as a production assistant on Dora and Friends. Shortly after\, she was taken under the wing of Vampirina’s show creator\, Chris Nee where she started as a script coordinator and worked her way up to full time staff writer. Karissa has written for preschool favorites such as Disney Junior’s Doc McStuffins\, T.O.T.S and their upcoming series The Chicken Squad. \n. \n. \n. \n  \nJohn Timothy (Muskogee) is an LA-based writer and comedian. As a screenwriter\, John crosses between comedy and drama. He most recently served as Staff Writer on the upcoming crime drama series LEVERAGE 2.0 for IMDB TV\, Amazon Studios\, and Electric Entertainment. John also teaches and performs at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre\, where he has trained\, performed\, written and directed since 2006. Currently\, John is in the voice cast of Netflix’s upcoming animated series SPIRIT RANGERS. John is a tribal citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation\, and he was a participant in the 2019 LA Skins Fest Native American TV Writers Lab. He is currently a Fellow in the 2020 LA Skins Native American Showrunner Program. Previously\, John co-wrote THE THIRD PARTY\, a mockumentary feature about third-party presidential candidates in the 2016 election. Originally from Indiana\, John graduated from Amherst College\, where he received a B.A. in Asian Languages and Civilizations. He uses it every day. \n  \nSponsored by: \n\n
