2018 NATIVE AMERICAN FEATURE FILM WRITERS LAB

August 8, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

The 2018 NATIVE AMERICAN FEATURE FILM WRITERS LAB, sponsored by NBC Universal, The Walt Disney Company, HBO and Turner, has selected four Native American writers to be part of this year’s lab! The lab is designed to familiarize participants with the format, characters and storyline structure of narrative feature film.

Our fellows will take part in a ten week curriculum instructed by Amedeo D’Adamo. The lab will consist of daily workshops, seminars and one-on-one mentoring to help each writer develop and complete a feature script in ten weeks. The ten week total immersion workshop will be conducted in Los Angeles, CA

Meet the 2018 NATIVE AMERICAN FEATURE FILM WRITERS LAB fellows below:

Carlee Malemute (Athabascan)

Eva Thomas (Tohono O’odham/Ojibway/Cherokee)

Isaac Cruz (Taino)

Richard Montes (Chichimeca/Blackfeet)

At the end of the program, each fellow will have completed a feature film script and will take creative meetings with various executives. Our selectees will be invited to participate in the 8th Annual Writers Pitch Workshop as part of the 2018 LA SKINS FEST in November.

About the program:

The NATIVE AMERICAN FEATURE FILM WRITERS LAB is an intensive scriptwriters workshop that prepares Native Americans for writing careers at major film studios and production companies.  Our program was created in accordance with the LA Skins Fest’s mission to improve media portrayals of Native Americans and to increase the number of Native Americans employed in all facets of the media industry.

It is widely understood that non-Native Americans primarily learn about our community from what they see in media.  Our overall goal is to have Native American writers employed at high level studio positions offering more diversity reflected in film.
